The Giggler Treatment

This is the review of The Giggler Treatment, the first of Roddy Doyle's Rover series.

The Gigglers were a species that can camouflage. They took dog poo and put it in front of grown-ups that were mean to children. A man named Mr. Mack had gotten mad at his sons, Jimmy and Robbie, for breaking the kitchen window the eighth time that week. He sent them to their room and the  Gigglers knew that he deserved the treatment. Once they left to get some dog poo, Mr. Mack called the boys down to say that they could have anything for dinner. That was a very good thing Mr. Mack did and the treatment would not be deserved but the Gigglers were already gone.

The next day Mr, Mack took off to the train station to go to work. He worked at the biscuit factory. He tasted all 365 biscuits, one for each day. He liked the Fig Rolls the best. The ones he liked the least were the Cream Crackers. They got into his daydreams and said the most boring things.

"If  you lose your pants, you need to get new ones, isn't that interesting?"

Just around the corner, the Gigglers had placed the undeserved dog poo and Mr. Mack was headed towards it. When he went around the corner he didn't see the poo because he was staring at a seagull who didn't like fish. Meanwhile, Robbie, Jimmy, and their younger sister, Kayla, were playing in the backyard. Kayla could only say "Abah" but everyone loved her so much they knew exactly what she meant. The ball Jimmy and Robbie were playing with went into a purple barrel. When they lifted it open they saw a Giggler because they can't camouflage well near purple. Robbie and Jimmy tell the Giggler about how Mr. Mack only had them in their room for a minute and he then let them have whatever they wanted for dinner. The Giggler said that they needed to make sure that Mr. Mack didn't step on the poo. Jimmy ran with the Giggler on his back, Robbie rode on their mom, Billy Jean Fleetwood Mack's shoulders, and Kayla rode Rover, who lived next door and could talk, but he would only talk to kids. Rover was a rich dog because he gets a lot of money from the Gigglers for making perfect poo. He also was the dog that made the poo that Mr. Mack was going to step on.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mack was 6" above the poo. He had stopped looking at the seagull but was too late to see the poo because the poo was in the shape of a shoe. It was also taking a long time for Mr. Mack to step on the poo because he was wearing new pants and they were very stiff. The rest of the Mack family were following Rover who knew a short cut. They went all around the world and then they finally went into a rabbit hole and came out at a wall and Mr. Mack was on the other side. Rover threw Kayla and for the first time spoke out in the open. He said, "Mind The Poo!" It was too late. Mr. Mack had stepped on the poo. Then, Rover threatened the writer and the writer changed it so that they were in time and everyone lived happily ever after.

I rate this book 4 1/2 stars ★★★★ 1/2★

The book was really funny and crazy but I think it could have been a little more serious. The next book I'm going to read is the sequel, Rover Saves Christmas, so look forward to that!
